Jena, June 27, 2007 – biolitec AG, Jena, listed in the Prime Standard of the Frankfurt stock exchange (ISIN DE0005213409) observes an increasing demand as well as increasing sales of equipment for the treatment of DCR (Dacryocystorhinostomy, watering eyes) in the Middle East and India. Due to an aging population, particularly Japan faces a strong demand for gentle procedures of treating DCR. Following the USA and the EU Asia is the world’s third largest healthcare market with a volume of more than US-Dollar 550 billion. In addition to that, biolitec could currently achieve good results with its treatment in China and South America.
Watering eyes caused by blockage of the lacrimal duct can be noticed not only amongst the elderly but also amongst younger people living under poor hygienic conditions, especially in the Third World (India, Sudan, etc.). Especially for this purpose, biolitec has developed a patented laser application set which turns the reopening of the lacrimal duct into a safer and minimally invasive procedure. Trained specialists can operate the procedure without any problems in 10 minutes.
In comparison to the traditional surgical reopening of the lacrimal duct, it saves the patient a time consuming, difficult procedure allied with considerable side effects. The painless and bleeding free treatment can be operated under local anaesthetics and leaves no visible scar.
Leading Japanese specialists in the field of DCR have now evaluated biolitec’s method with good results also in elderly patients. “The future cooperation with opinion leaders in Japan will push the establishment of the DCR treatment in the strictly regulated Japanese market”, explains Dr. Neuberger, CEO of biolitec AG. “So additional market potential arises for biolitec on the second largest healthcare market in the world”, Dr. Neuberger adds. The further establishment of this biolitec procedure will be supported by conduction of a study.
Europe still needs to catch up considerably. For further expansion, an improved cooperation between ENT and ophthalmologists is necessary.
