Jena, July 3, 2007 – One of the leading American rental companies for medical lasers entered into an US $ 9.5 million contract with biolitec for equipping doctors’ offices with the urology laser LIFE (Laser Induced Flow Enhancement) for the ambulant treatment of the benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).
At present, a total of 300,000 BPH surgeries are conducted in the USA per annum. In the future biolitec’s laser will belong to the standard equipment for the treatment of prostate hyperplasia in many urological offices in the USA, where rental companies have specialised in renting expensive medical equipment on an hour or day basis. That way e.g. a doctor’s office can lend the valuable urology laser, being delivered on site, for a certain date in order to carry out the surgery within a defined timeframe.
Its high power makes biolitec’s diode laser LIFE the only laser system suitable for both ambulant and stationary BPH treatment, additionally biolitec’s innovative technology created a remarkably compact design that makes transportation easy. Due to its peak power of up to 300 Watts this diode laser is able to vaporize prostate tissue in a very efficient way. In addition to small blood vessels, the prostate tissue also contains a lot of water. A wavelength that is effective in both biological mediums offers an essential advantage: Both vaporization and coagulation can be realised equally. Thus, gentle ablation can be guaranteed as well as avoidance of post operational haemorrhage.
According to the expansion of the American market position also in Germany first reference centres could be set up and German physicians could be enthused for the new technology.
Dr. Wolfgang Neuberger, CEO of the biolitec AG:”Also in this country the first physicians start to initiate a paradigm shift in the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia. We have about 100,000 treatments of the benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) in Germany per year. In the future patients can to a large extent choose between a stationary and an ambulant stay.”
Due to the augmented installation, respectively leasing of LIFE lasers biolitec AG expects a significant increase in sales of fibre optics and probes in the next business year, since the corresponding accessories must be replaced for each treatment.
The use of the new urology laser will stabilise further expansion of biolitec’s market position as a leading provider of the new BPH treatment, thus an additional growth in sales is expected for the USA and soon also for Europe.
